Five Minute Healthy Tips Your Recovery Coaching Clients Will Love

Do you have clients that want to add healthy habits to their daily routine?

These healthy tips will empower our clients to create new and healthy habits in less than 5-minutes a day.

Have your clients answer the following questions.

  1. How are your sleep habits? Do you wake up feeling rested and are you tired when you go to bed at night?
  2. Are you familiar with meditation? Have you tried meditating or other mindfulness practices?
  3. How much of your day is spent sitting?
  4. In a typical day, how many hours are spent looking at a screen (phone, computer, tablet)?
  5. How much many glasses of water do you drink each day?

Based on their answers, spend a few minutes discussing which area is the most challenging for them, and review the 5-minute tip below that applies.

Sleep Habits: Our bodies and brains require 7-9 hours of sleep per night. When we are REM sleep deprived, we get grumpy, and become unproductive. To ensure that you are getting enough sleep, wake up and go to bed at the same time every day (yes even on the weekends).

Set an alarm for 5-minutes before the time you want to be in bed. When your bedtime alarm goes off, put your phone in another room (use a traditional alarm clock) and get into bed. Even if you don’t immediately fall asleep, this structure will get you in the habit of getting up and getting to bed at the same time each day.

For more info on sleep duration recommendations, see the National Sleep Foundation Sleep Duration Recommendations Chart.

Meditation & Mindfulness Practices: Many of have heard about the benefits of meditation (more focused attention, relaxation, positive shifts in mood, enhanced self-awareness, improved health and well-being, but have you tried it? Set aside 5-minutes in your morning routine to meditate. Guided meditations are a great place to start. The Chopra Center has several guided meditations that you can try.

Walking & Movement: Our culture lends itself to be sedentary. Walking is the optimal solution. According to Harvard Medical School, walking counteracts the effects of weight-promoting genes, helps tame a sweet tooth, eases joint pain and boosts immune function. The faster, further and more frequently you walk, the greater the benefits.  For every hour that you are sedentary, stand up and walk around for 5-minutes to get your blood moving.

Digital Detox: Eye stress and strain can create headaches and dizziness and a condition called Computer vision syndrome (CVS).Try the 20-20-20 rule, for every 20 minutes you are looking at a screen (phone, tablet, computer) stop and look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. After you do the 20-20-20 rule, take 5-minutes away from the screen.

Water & Staying Hydrated: According to the Mayo Clinic, every system in your body depends on water. Becoming dehydrated makes it challenging to function. The standard of eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day is an ideal rule to follow. The 5-minute tip is to drink one 8-ounce glass of water before every meal and after every time you go to the bathroom.

By investing 5-minutes a day, your client will feel empowered to implement healthy living habits into their day-to-day lives.

Millions of people are in the Addiction Curve

sobrietyMany people ask us why we do what we do. The answer is really quite simple. We go to work every day to help those who are stuck in the addiction curve and can’t complete recovery on their own. We’re in this business because we believe people who are in this curve are worth helping.

So what is the addiction curve?

The addiction curve is, simply, a process of going from abusing to those who become addicted and then finally to those who are in recovery. According to our research, there are approximately 60 million people who are in the abusing phase of this curve. Will they all reach extreme addiction? Probably not. But this is where addiction begins.

One of our goals is to catch people at this point in the curve, before they spiral out of control. As recovery coaches, we don’t have to wait until these people have reached rock bottom to help them. Instead, it is often the best approach to help these individuals before they ever reach the point of severe addiction. We may not catch all people, but the more we help here, the more likely we are to help them reach recovery.

Currently, there are 2.3 million people in treatment. It is a common misconception that treatment will be enough to fight off addiction. For some, this may be true. For many, it takes a lot more after treatment is over to stay in recovery.

We play our largest role for those who have completed treatment, but are still on the road to recovery. When we help people at this point in the recovery process, we can save lives and bring people into full recovery. It is crucial that we find these people and help them. That is our goal and that is why we do what we do.

In total, there are at least 84 million people who can benefit from recovery coaches. This is 84 million people we have the potential of helping when we have the correct tools. If you’re considering joining us as a recovery coach, please check out our training programs to see how you can collect the tools you’ll need.

A Case for Less Passion – 5 Reasons

OK, I am prepared for the onslaught of readers disagreeing with my premise. Not really! Hardly anyone reads my blog, so, you few, loyal, and truly treasured supporters are left with the burden of pointing out my (in your eyes) obvious failings on this topic. But I wanted to explain what I mean by having less passion.

First, I should state for the record, for those that may not know me well, that I am by nature, a very passionate person. I care. I can’t just turn that off. Probably you are too. You have causes, concerns, issues, topics, human beings, that you care deeply about and for. I get that. It’s a good thing. Heck, it’s a GREAT thing. We need more people like you in this world. We need people that care deeply about other people, and about injustices, and things that we all just FEEL are not right. But, at times (many times), our passion gets in the way of us being effective in righting the wrongs, and in being able to help people. This is the point of my premise, so let’s explore what I mean. Here are 5 reasons to hold back on your passion.

  1. Extreme Passion drowns out the basic message

Don’t let your passionate plea turn people off to the point that your great message or cause is lost. Get the message delivered, let the cause be heard.

  2. Fervid Passion overwhelms the person you are trying to help

I believe that deep down, we all welcome a little help. Many of us need a lot of help, and it is good to have people around that are there to support and help us get through the rough spots in life. However, a passionate plea may totally overwhelm the person needing the help, and they might push you away as a result. Not many people enjoy being preached or lectured to. Don’t allow your passion to become a scolding.

  3. Passion can create a blind spot

A Scotoma is a partial loss of vision or a blind spot in an otherwise normal visual field. Feeling so passionate about an issue, person, cause, or social injustice can create a blind spot, to the point that we no longer think, see it or act objectively about it. My grandmother had a favorite Cuban saying, “Le ciega la pasión”, meaning, their passion blinds them. Be passionate, but be objective and make sure you see the many sides of complex people and issues.

  4. Other People’s Passions

You have passion. Other people have passion. What about their passions? Be aware. The thing you are MOST passionate about, may not even make their top 10. That’s OK. Their’s may not make yours either. But be aware, and be respectful. Just because you feel strongly about the plight of Baby Seals (I do too!), doesn’t mean everyone else will see it as THE most burning issue to be most passionate about. I buy Girl Scout cookies, but not everyone does.

  5. Passion can create misalignment or lost support

Causes require alignment to address them. People in need require resources to assist them. Issues require thoughtful and deliberate discussion and debate to explore and resolve them. Don’t fall into the trap during a discussion of losing someone’s support and alignment by continuing to escalate your passionate plea to the point where what was once a healthy discussion, debate and willingness to listen and help, is now a diametrically opposite way of thinking. Someone who was aligned and ready to help, is all of a sudden misaligned and actually even working against you. Throttle your passion, and bring people along with you slowly, respectfully, kindly, thoughtfully.

Every day, more and more, I see passionate people engaging in these damaging Passion behaviors, and falling into these Passion traps. We are living in politically and socially charged and potentially explosive times. There are many people, issues, events, and causes that are creating unhealthy debates, arguments, and at times, downright unacceptable behavior and actions. Good people against good people, and some not so good people too, so passionate about their viewpoint, it colors their thinking, dialogue, speech, conversation, and most importantly, their actions. Dial the passion back a bit. You can still feel and be passionate, without creating the negatively charged and explosive atmosphere that pushes people away, and causes the exact opposite effect that you had hoped to have by being passionate in the first place.

I hope this was a helpful and respectful (while remaining passionate!) viewpoint. It would be terrific to hear what you have to say! Let me know. And if you would be so kind, consider liking and signing up for my blog please! Thanks so much!

A Proclivity for Productivity

When productivity lags and you find you are spinning your wheels and expending maximum effort for minimum gain – maybe you need to develop some proclivity. That is a funny way of saying “having a tendency to do something regularly; or an inclination or predisposition toward a particular thing.” Productivity is built on good habits – things we do over and over again that work. However, the onslaught of daily challenges can wear away at our bedrock of simply good work habits. Sometimes it is good to take a step back, take a deep breath and reset the things we do daily to ensure we’re doing the things we know will work.

Here are some reminders of things you may not be doing

  1. Clean up. End your week by cleaning up the clutter. Old projects, notes scratched down that are outdated, candy wrappers and water bottles. Tidying up your workspace and making it fresh and clean can have a tremendous impact on your sense of order and calm. You will feel energized and ready to go when you walk in Monday morning.
  2. Start off rested. Schedule time to wind down before bed and ensure you get a full night’s rest.
  3. Choose the right time. Everyone has a time of day when they find they are more effective, creative, or productive. Schedule important projects for that time of day.
  4. Prioritize tasks at the start of your day. Tackle hard things first, you will feel energized as you begin to mark those nagging projects off your list – and you can usually complete them quicker than you think when you set your mind to it.
  5. When projects require focus, block time for it. While you’re working, turn off the phone / cell phone, and turn off email alerts. Hang a sign that says, “Do not disturb,” if necessary. You don’t have to do this for all your tasks, but at least do it during the more difficult items.
  6. Batch similar tasks together. Respond to email at a set time every day. Make all your phone calls at another. Group together general tasks like sorting mail or preparing articles. You’ll waste less time by doing your work in this fashion.
  7. Set targets. For example, if you have to make marketing calls, tell yourself that you’re not getting up for any reason until you’ve completed the list of 5 contacts you need to connect with. Regardless of what happens, refuse to stop until you hit your target.
  8. Use the Pareto Principle. This principle states that 20% of the actions you could take will provide you with 80% of the benefits. So focus on the tasks that will accomplish the most. Unfortunately, these are frequently the tasks that are not enjoyable. You might be surprised how little you really have to do if you focus on the critical 20%.
  9. Delegate some of your work. Is there anyone else who can help you? The people around you are resources. When appropriate, use their time and talents wisely to get things done more quickly.
  10. Set a deadline. Having a specific endpoint will really help to focus your time and energy. If a task doesn’t feel necessary, chances are that it won’t get done.
  11. Stand up to focus. Stand up desks are not only healthy for weight and posture, but standing at your desk can create a sense of urgency and you stay more focused on the tasks at hand rather than slouching back in your office chair.
  12. Set a goal each day (or night). In the morning, decide what you want to accomplish that day. This can be even more effective when planned the night before. Once you have a sense of direction, you can spend all your time getting things done!

Implement these methods into your life and you’ll find yourself getting more done in less time. The ultimate secret is to stay on task and not waste any time. These tips will help you do just that.
