The science behind therapy animals
They’re considered professionals. They can bring comfort to people suffering from mental illness, substance abuse, dementia or trauma. These healers, however, don’t have actual professional degrees. Instead, they have four paws and a furry face. And they’re doing some incredible work in the counseling and recovery fields.
While there may not be one definite explanation as to why or how these animals help, we know that they do. These therapy animals – mainly dogs and cats – have made headline after headline because they bring smiles to those in need.
The Mayo Clinic uses therapy dogs for their patients to help them get through traumatic procedures, diagnoses, and illnesses. Their website says, “An assistance dog and its handler visit your hospital room. They stay for 10 or 15 minutes. You’re invited to pet the dog and ask the handler questions. After the visit, you realize you’re smiling. And you feel a little less tired and a bit more optimistic. You can’t wait to tell your family all about that charming canine. In fact, you’re already looking forward to the dog’s next visit.”
Therapy animals are often called in to help people after incredibly traumatic situations. In Newtown, Connecticut, therapy dogs met with children who experienced the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. In Orlando, dogs were present to bring comfort to those affected by the nightclub shooting. These stories show just how real animal therapy can be.
The beautiful thing about animals is that they have unconditional love. They don’t judge or discriminate. They’re happy to love and be loved. These traits make it possible for patients to bond with them, confide in them, and relax around them. The fact that these animals will not judge them or hurt them makes it possible for them to experience therapy in a way humans often aren’t capable of offering.

What Is a Life Coach and Do You Need One?
Coaching is defined on Wikipedia as “a form of development in which a person called a coach supports a learner or client in achieving a specific personal or professional goal.”
Athletes have coaches. Many entrepreneurs and professionals have coaches or mentors. They’re really the same thing. A life coach is a coach who assists with personal or professional development. Most of us weren’t formally taught how to live successfully! And we often wonder why we are not living up to the potential we know we have. A life coach can help you to tune in to your life’s purpose, set goals, and achieve them. A good life coach will have experience in helping others to live fulfilling lives.
Working with a Life Coach can have a number of benefits.
- A Life Coach is a cheerleader. Life is easier when someone is in your corner. When you know you have support, it’s easier to take risks and chase after big goals. You always have someone on your side when you have a life coach. Your life coach will also push you. They’ve seen plenty of clients attempt to avoid hard work and stressful situations. They’ll know when you’re playing games and push you to succeed.
- A Life Coach provides guidance. It’s not always easy to make good decisions, especially when you’re stressed or fearful. And it’s often hard to make good decisions on your own without an objective listener. A life coach can help you to make wise decisions. A friend can’t always be objective or completely honest, but your life coach can. You’ll hear what you need to hear from your life coach.
- A Life Coach helps you to set your course. It doesn’t matter if you’re 18 or 68. A mentor can help you to determine what the next step of your life should be. If you’re feeling lost, a life coach might be the answer.
- A Life Coach will help you to find balance. Life coaches are aware that there’s more to life than just money or a perfect beach body. They emphasize keeping all parts of a person’s life in balance. Health, professional success, relationships, finances, spirituality and leisure activities are all part of a well-balanced life.
- A Life Coach can help with many facets of life. A few of these include:
- Career
- Love life
- Finding your life’s purpose
- Achieving challenging goals
- Making more money
- Creating more free time
- Following an exercise program
- Starting a business
It’s important to note that a Life Coach is not a therapist.
Therapists deal with past issues and traumas. Life Coaches work from the present moment and into the future. A Life Coach won’t help you get over a past loss or deal with the fact that you were bullied in junior high. A Life Coach can guide you toward building a more desirable future.
Life Coaches are also not required to have any training. There are organizations that certify life coaches, but they aren’t necessary to hang out a shingle and make a living as a life coach. Be sure to vet anyone you’re considering hiring as a Life Coach. You will want to know they have had the appropriate training and the experience that suggests they can help you with your particular needs. There are many great coaches out there when you begin to take a look around.
Pay attention to reviews and schedule an introductory session to see if a particular Life Coach is a good fit. Most will offer a free session. Choose carefully.
Do you need a Life Coach? A Life Coach won’t solve your challenges, but they can help you to help yourself. Unlock Your Personal Potential
Do you ever wonder why you haven’t accomplished more with your life? Do you feel that you have great potential locked up inside of you? Most adults feel this way. Many of us never even scratch the surface of our true potential. Are you ready to find out what you can do to change that?
Find out what you’re really capable of accomplishing!
- Be bold. This is the number one tip for unleashing your potential on the world. Any limited achievements are likely due to the fact that you have been timid. If you were out there doing your best each day, you’d be too busy piling up successes to be pondering why you haven’t accomplished more in your life. Stop caring about the opinions of others and show the world what you’ve got.
- Have bold goals. To live up to your potential, you need goals. Goals provide a direction for your energy and effort. Effective goals are motivating, which is great if you’re going to set bold goals! Avoid overwhelming yourself. Goals should be bold, but not overwhelming. They should energize you, not discourage you.
- Combine your strengths and interests. Save your efforts for things you truly enjoy doing. You’ll have the most potential in the areas where you show natural strength and have a high level of interest. What are you good at that you also enjoy?
- Get expert assistance. Some of the leading experts in the world still have a coach or mentor. The right mentor can help you to reach your potential faster than you can do it alone. Spend the time necessary to find a good mentor. It’s like putting your progress on the fast track.
- Make progress each day. A small amount of progress, accumulated over time, can result in amazing overall accomplishment. Avoid overwhelming yourself by setting a schedule or goals that you can’t maintain. Keep it simple, and keep it consistent. Just be sure to make some progress each and every day. If you stick with it, the amount of progress you can make in a year will be staggering!
- Develop habits that help you accomplish your goals. In keeping with the theme of making progress each day, your habits are an absolute key to success. Cultivate habits that are in agreement with your goals.
- Examine your goals and determine the habits that would make success likely. The hardest job you have is establishing those habits. (I have heard it takes 3 weeks to establish a habit – so be intentional and be disciplined!) Once the right habits are in place, progress will be automatic. Create an effective routine and stick with it.
- Determine your obstacles. There’s always something in the way. It might be a lack of time, money, or other resource. Maybe you fight the battle of the blankets after the alarm has gone off. Maybe you lack faith in yourself. Ask yourself what is holding you back – and then determine that you will not allow it anymore. You are worth more than that and this world needs you to be your best and most prosperous and successful self!
- Expect success. If you expect failure, you’re bound to fail. Why not give yourself the benefit of the doubt and expect good things? If you have solid goals, good habits, and a smidge of discipline, there’s no reason to doubt yourself.
Making a few decisions, acting boldly, and finding a mentor are just a few of the things you can do to unlock your potential. Make today the day you start living at your highest level. What are you waiting for?
